Ben’s Birthday

Posted Monday, April 19th, 2010 by Mollie

Our fun little boy turned one on March 31!  Being a second child and all, Ben’s birthday cake (carrot cupcakes) was definitely not his first experience with sweet baked goods.  This boy knows exactly what to do with a cupcake.

For the kids, one of the highlights of dinner at my parents’ house is feeding crickets to Mike’s “dragon” (as Natalie calls him).  Ben is fascinated!  What a fun birthday treat.

Here’s our Ben, about to open his classic first birthday present from Grandpa Wilkie and Lennie, a soccer ball!  Natalie is smiling big because she honestly thought it was a giant piece of candy.

Happy Birthday, Ben! Don’t let your sister take all your stuff!

Easter Egg Hunt 2010

They let me hide the eggs… so fun!

Natalie loves this game!

Ben enjoyed the hunt as well.  He’s up for anything that involves crawling through bushes and putting stuff in his mouth.

We thought that this bucket of Easter grass would be a great way to keep the kids (that’s our friend Aspen, who is 1 month older than Ben) sitting still for a picture.  Turns out it’s impossible to get them to look at a camera with that kind of distraction around!

She’s Cute AND Smart!

Most days, I try to have a little casual time where Natalie and I work on her letters and numbers. Occasionally I see that some of it is sinking in, which is encouraging and makes me think that maybe we really could home school our kids (that’s the plan for now).

The other day I asked Natalie to write her name, and this is what she came up with all on her own:

Okay, so it may not look like much, but– the first letter is “N” (she really likes to write N’s but gets carried away sometimes), the second letter is “t” (obviously) and the third is “0”, which makes sense to Natalie because she pronounces her own name “Na-toe-lie” and routinely insists that there is an “o” in her name.

I asked her to do it again and she improved a bit on the N:

I know I’m just an overly excited parent, but I was really happy to see her little thought process playing out here. I’m sure sure she will be writing “Nata” (or maybe “Nato”?) before we know it.

She also likes to “i” and “w”, as seen here, along with more “t”. She has no interest in “a” for some reason.

PS- I promise there will be a Ben post soon, since he did have a birthday and all!

Stage Fright

Well, this is a picture of how Natalie spent her first ballet recital.  She got a little nervous and didn’t want to go on stage, but it’s okay (though I think she regretted it later when her class came on and she knew the dance!).  Natalie has learned a lot of ballet steps since beginning the class though, and gave us a personal recital afterwards.  Perhaps there will be more performances in her future.

Mr. Mischief

Lately, Ben has become very good at climbing and moving things around.  The other day I found him perched on top of Natalie’s chair, looking out the window.   Probably not the safest place, but he’s pretty careful when climbing up and down (and mostly supervised).

Ben loves his “Nah-nuh” (Nata) but does occasionally cause some trouble for her.  Within 15 minutes of the first chair climbing incident, he pushed Natalie’s chair right out from under her, leaving her hanging precariously.  She said, “Mom? Help!” but kept right on coloring.

But could this be the face of a trouble maker?   His first birthday is this week, by the way!
